Due to go on sale at GMC dealers in Waco during the summer of 2020 is the 2021 GMC Yukon, the latest generation of its king-sized, three-row SUV. Speaking of size, the new Yukon will be available in both large and extra-large versions, the same as current models. The biggest of the bunch will appropriately bear the name Yukon XL. Aside from this similarity with previous Yukon’s, the 2021 version has been reimagined as a whole new vehicle, its first complete overhaul in six years. This all-new Yukon is bigger both on the outside as well as on the inside and includes new and updated technology features as well as more safety features, additional amenities, and a new Diesel engine option.

At the media announcement, which revealed the newest Yukon to the world, top GMC executives touted the fact that this is the best Yukon ever and explained why in detail. Greater emphasis was also placed on the premium luxury nature of this full-sized SUV, especially when fully loaded in the top-tier Denali trim level. Below, let’s take a closer look at what’s new in the 2021 GMC Yukon.

As mentioned above, the new Yukon is bigger and roomier, but there’s more to the 2021 model than just size. New tech and safety features abound, including a system of nine cameras that make parking and towing a whole lot easier, magnetic ride control, and an optional air suspension system. All 2021 Yukon trims now switch from the former live-axle design to a new independent multilink suspension, which provides a better ride and expands the interior room in the back. The top of the line Denali version comes loaded with even more luxury features and, for the first time, has its own exclusive interior treatment.

The all-new Yukon is scheduled to arrive at GMC dealerships beginning this summer, with the standard models being available first and the larger Yukon XL models being available a bit later after that. Final pricing is still to be determined and will be announced closer to sale time, but based on current models, buyers can expect to be looking at between $50,000 for the base model and upwards of $80,000 for a fully-loaded Denali edition.

Introducing the 2021 GMC Yukon AT4

In GMC-speak, the AT4 is the term used to describe their premium off-road variants. The first AT4 trim level was found in the full-size Sierra pickup and was later found on the Acadia crossover and the mid-size Canyon pickup. 2021 marks the first time that the Yukon will be available in an AT4 model, a breakthrough moment for the vehicle. The brand new Yukon AT4 offers four-wheel drive, skid plates, 20-inch all-terrain tires, and a traction selection system with an off-road mode. Extra touches include a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, leather seating, and optional 4-corner air suspension.

Under the hood

Like it’s siblings, the Tahoe and Suburban, the 2021 GMC Yukon will have three engines to choose from––new versions of the standard 355 horsepower 5.3L V8 and optional 460 horsepower 6.2L V8 as well as a brand new diesel option, a 3.0L turbocharged inline-6. All engine options across the entire Yukon lineup will be paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission. While the official fuel economy numbers are not yet available, GMC claims that all of the engine options provide impressive performance and efficiency, making them the most fuel-efficient vehicles in the full-size SUV category. The diesel option, in particular, is expected to excel at towing heavy cargo.

On the inside

Also, like the Tahoe and Suburban, the new Yukon also gain substantially more room in the cabin due to its increased exterior size. Passengers will surely appreciate the additional 10 inches of third-row legroom now found on the standard Yukon model, coupled with ten more cu.ft. of cargo space behind the rear seating. These equate to a respective 41 and 66 percent increase over the previous generations of the Yukon. The longer Yukon XL model also makes gains as far as interior space, but not quite as dramatic as the standard model. Still, increases in both legroom and cargo space are appreciable.

As with its predecessors, the 2021 Yukon is notable for its seating configurations, which can still comfortably hold nine passengers when equipped with a bench seat up in the front. For buyers who have the need to carry a large family, this is ideal. The most popular configurations will probably continue to be the eight-passenger setup or a seven-passenger version fitted with captain’s chairs in the second row.

For families with kids, the rear seating is expected to also feature 12.6-inch entertainment screens, reportedly the largest of any in the premium SUV segment. These large screens can be seen by folks sitting in the third row and can display with the same or different content based on the input. They also come bundled with on-board navigation.

A Focus On Safety

For a vehicle of this size and since its primary focus is transporting large numbers of passengers, advanced safety features are a critical component. There are no specific details yet, but GMC states that the new Yukon will have a broader availability of features such as lane-keeping assist, a surround-view camera, a new rear pedestrian alert, and a new digital rearview mirror which should assist when towing cargo. All Yukon models are also expected to come standard with automatic emergency braking. Buyers should keep an eye out for more information as the Yukon gets closer to launch time.
