Certified Pre-Owned Trucks vs Used Trucks
When looking over the used Chevy trucks on our lot, you’ll come across both used and Certified Pre-Owned models. While both have been previously owned and driven by other drivers, you might wonder what the difference is. All vehicles are considered used, but to be considered Certified Pre-Owned, the vehicle needs to meet very specific requirements. When these requirements are met, the truck receives a number off benefits and is like new.
In order for a Chevy to obtain a Certified Pre-Owned status (different manufacturers have varying requirements, so the requirements for one manufacturer will not always be the same as another) the pickup needs to be within six model years of the current model, be under a maximum of 75,000 miles, have a clean title, pass a vehicle history report, pass a 172-point inspection, and have all the vehicle recalls performed on the truck. Then, and only then, will a vehicle receive its Certified Pre-Owned status.
When a vehicle receives this certification, it comes with several perks. Some of these perks include a 6-year/100,000 mile powertrain limited warranty. It also has a 12-month/12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty, both of which come with a $0 deductible. The vehicle will come with two included maintenance visits and a CPO (Certified Pre-Owned) scheduled maintenance program as well as a vehicle exchange program. This means that if after the first three days or 150 miles you’re not happy with the vehicle, you can bring it in and exchange it.
Tacked on, you’ll also receive three months of OnStar Safety and Security, plus three months of SiriusXM Satellite Radio.
Consider the Chevy Colorado
Chevy came out with its full redesign of the Chevy Colorado in 2015. However, General Motors had stopped production of the vehicle for the 2013 and 2014 model years, so you won’t find those models available.
If you’re interested in a diesel engine, the 2016 model year of the Chevy Colorado did offer a 2.8L I4 turbodiesel engine. From the 2016 model year on, there has been a diesel engine offering, which helps boost your towing potential as well as fuel economy. If you’re not sure whether you should go with a traditional unleaded gasoline engine or diesel, just ask our staff. We’ll go over what you plan on doing with the truck and how you’ll use it. This will make it easier to recommend not only the right pickup model but also the right engine.
The 2017 model year brought with it a new V6 with 8-speed automatic transmission (and a slight boost in horsepower thanks to the new transmission), while the 2019 edition of the Colorado has the biggest improvement in the truck’s infotainment setup. If you’re looking to maximize your entertainment features, you’ll want to go with a newer model release.
Chevy Silverado 1500
You can go back several model years with the Chevy Silverado and still receive a number of impressive features. The 2015 Chevy Silverado saw an improvement in the transmission, switching from a 6.2L V8 six-speed transmission to an eight-speed transmission. It also was the first to offer an available WiFi hotspot for this model. The following year in 2016, the eight-speed transmission made its way onto the smaller 5.3L V8 engine as well. If you’re looking for a truck for towing, you’ll want to go for a 2017 Chevy Silverado or newer, as new changes to the suspension and build helped increase the max towing from the previous year.
Of course, if you want a pickup that looks brand new but is still a year old, consider the 2019 model. While there are still new 2019 Silverados around, now is the time where some drivers are trading in their 2019s for a 2020. The 2019 saw a complete redesign of the half-ton pickup, so you’ll have a truck that looks like the current model year but at a lower price point.
There’s Always Something Bigger
Perhaps you’re looking for a pickup that offers even more towing power and performance features than what you find on the Chevy Silverado 1500. When this is the case, you should consider one of the heavy-duty pickups, such as the 2500 or the 3500 trucks. These trucks will give you a stronger, more durable suspension, which is designed to boost your towing capacity and max payload. These trucks will come with larger engines and more powerful diesel offerings. You can push the towing potential to nearly three times what the half-ton Silverado can offer.
One thing to keep in mind when shopping for these larger pickups though, is the heavy-duty models are not as widely sold as the Silverado 1500. This means there will be fewer options, and there, in general, won’t be as many coming in regularly. Just about every model year over the last five years or so, the Silverado 1500 has been in the top five vehicles sold in the United States, so you will have options with this. If you’re set on a heavy-duty pickup, though, we’ll do our best to find you the perfect match.
