Have you heard the news? Buick made a huge announcement in May 2020 regarding its plans to expand its lineup of SUVs with its all-new 2021 Buick Envision. Set to arrive at a Buick dealership near you in early 2021, the model will see several new upgrades, including a variety of safety and technology features as well as Buick’s signature styling. So, what will the 2021 Envision offer to drivers who are looking for a compact and stylish SUV? Join us as we take a closer look!

2020 Trims and Design

The Buick Envision combines technology and styling to offer drivers a luxury SUV with seating for five that won’t break the bank with the 2020 models starting at $33,500. For 2021, Buick took the design even further as Global Buick and GMC Design executive director Helen Emsley shared in the May 2020 announcement. “The design and technology in the all-new Buick Envision are sure to be a hit in today’s growing premium SUV market,” she reported. “The 2021 Envision will be lower and wider, with premium proportions and striking styling designed to combine the expressiveness of a car with the practicality of an SUV.”

The 2020 Envision offers five different trims beginning with the Envision (1SV) that starts at $33,500 and features a sliding and reclining second-row seat, push-button start, and 60/40 split-folding rear seats to maximize interior space. The next trim is the Preferred, which also starts at $33,500, and features safety technology like rear park assist and a rear vision camera as well as smartphone connectivity. The Essence starts at $35,800 and includes the Preferred features as well as leather seating, a heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel, and rear cross-traffic alert.

The next step up from the Essence is the Premium trim, which starts at $40,700 and offers an upgraded 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Additional improvements include a Bose seven-speaker premium audio system and enhanced safety features like forward collision alert and lane keep assist with lane departure warning. The final trim is the Premium II, which starts at $43,600 and includes every feature and upgrade imaginable. The Premium II model includes a head-up display and the Buick Infotainment System with navigation as well as automatic parking assist and both heated and cooled front seats.

New for 2021

Buick made a notable upgrade to the 2021 Envision lineup by including the premium Avenir trim as an option for drivers looking for even more luxury. The package features several exclusive exterior colors as well as unique interior trim options. Other additions include a signature mesh front grille. Buick also matched the wheel well trim color with the body color to enhance the Envision’s overall aesthetic.

Engine and Performance

Buick designed the 2020 Envision with performance in mind and marketed it as one of the most capable SUVs on the road “from the carpool lane to the fast lane and everywhere in between.” The 2020 models feature two powertrain options beginning with the standard 2.5-liter engine that delivers 197 hp. Drivers looking for more power can upgrade to the 2.0-liter turbo engine that produces 252 hp and is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Both powertrain options include stop-start technology to reduce fuel consumption, which is what gives the 2020 models an impressive fuel economy of 22 MPG in the city and 29 MPG on the highway.

New for 2021

Buick eliminated the 2.5-liter engine from the lineup of 2021 Envision models and replaced it with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is already found on the newer Cadillac SUV models. This turbocharged engine is expected to deliver 235 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, making it a notable improvement over the 2020 Envision’s base engine. However, it will be a slight downgrade from the current top engine, leaving open the possibility of an even more powerful engine option in the future (perhaps the Cadillac 3.6-liter V6?).

Safety and Technology

Buick offers an impressive list of safety and driver assistance features that make the Envision an outstanding and capable SUV. The 2020 models feature a surround vision camera that gives drivers a bird’ s-eye view of the vehicle and its surroundings. This is enhanced by Buick’s safety suite, which includes forward-collision alert, ten standard airbags, rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, and lane change alert with side blind zone alert. The 2020 models can also be upgraded to include enhanced automatic emergency braking.

The 2020 Envision also offers an array of the latest technology, beginning with the Buick Infotainment System. This is the SUV’s connectivity hub and features smartphone integration, built-in navigation, and more from its 8-inch color touchscreen. The higher-end trim packages also feature a head-up display that allows drivers to keep their eyes on the road by projecting the car’s speed and other vital information on the windshield. Other technology features include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration as well as a built-in 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless smartphone charging, and teen driver software that helps new drivers track their driving behaviors and limit distractions while behind the wheel.

Buick upgraded the 2021 Envision to include more standard safety features on every trim. These new standards include automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, forward collision alert, following distance indicator, rear park assist, safety alert seat, and an HD rear vision camera. Available upgrades include enhanced automatic parking assist, HD surround vision, front park assist, rear cross-traffic alert, lane change alert with side blind zone alert, a head-up display, and a rear camera mirror.

One of the biggest upgrades to the 2021 Envision is to the Buick Infotainment System housed on the center dashboard. The system is now located on a 10-inch touchscreen display. The display features all the latest technology, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also features a built-in Amazon Alexa, Spotify, Fox Sports, Pandora, and more to make the Envision one of the most connected and smartphone-friendly SUVs on the road.
