A large brown dog and an orange cat are sitting in their new home in Waco, TX.

Here at Frank Kent Country, we love our furry friends. While we are a dealership, we understand how important pets are in our daily lives. There is nothing quite like going home after a day of work to curl up on the couch with our cat or to open the door to a dog patiently (or not so patiently) waiting for our arrival. There are so many wonderful things we could say about our pets, which is why we have highlighted a few shelters we love in Waco, Texas.

The Benefits of an Animal Shelter

If you’re looking to adopt a pet, or simply want to give back to our animal friends in need, an animal shelter is the best place to be. There are many benefits to adopting from an animal shelter; for one, you help save the life of an animal. Animals in shelters are often in need of a second chance, as they’ve either been abandoned by previous owners or were previously homeless. As a result, they’re relatively helpless, and animal shelters only have so many resources to house and host these animals.

Older animals are sometimes turned in by owners who cannot afford to keep up with rising medical costs, or because the owner themselves is aging and unable to care for them anymore. While the animal shelters do a good job of caring for these older animals, they do get lonely and long for companionship. By adopting an older animal from an animal shelter, you can give a home to some of these animals in need.

Not only do you give back by adopting from an animal shelter, but you can also save a lot of money. Purebred cats and dogs can cost an arm and a leg in some instances, whereas animal shelters charge relatively low adoption fees. On top of that, by adopting from an animal shelter you can motivate those who are unaware of the benefit of an animal shelter, and how adopting from one of these great charitable foundations can help give a loving home to an animal in need.

Humane Society of Central Texas

At the top of our list of local animal shelters is the Humane Society of Central Texas. They recently renovated their building, and are a great place to find your next ‘paw-rtner’ in crime. Their mobile adoption trailer is a great option to spend time and potentially adopt some of these charming animals in need. The Humane Society of Central Texas specializes in the adoption, rescue, and fostering of homeless animals throughout Central Texas. The shelter has a no-kill status for one year, and their doors are always open to new animals in need.

The Humane Society of Central Texas serves the cities of Waco as well as Beverly Hills, Hewitt, Lacy Lakeview, Lorena, Mart, McGregor, Moody, Riesel, Robinson, West, and Woodway. On their website, you’ll find hours, their current adoption roster, as well as monthly statistics that give you a clear view of how the Humane Society of Central Texas operates on a day to day basis.

The Humane Society is well-known for its fantastic adoption events like one they put on at Lowe’s Home Improvement on December 13. Some of their dogs found fantastic ‘fur-ever’ homes, including the sweet Rambo who is a cute black and white pitbull mix.

Fuzzy Friends Rescue

Next on our list of best animal shelters is the Fuzzy Friends Rescue facility. Here, the staff and founders believe that all animals are “entitled to a quality life, respect, and compassion.” The Fuzzy Friends Rescue facility hosts all kinds of animals, from newborn puppies to elderly cats.

The foundation was started by Betsy Robinson, who made it her mission to provide a home for the many furry friends in need throughout Central Texas. What began as a small idea in 1990 has blossomed into a beautiful place for animals of all ages and sizes. Since 1997, the Fuzzy Friends Rescue facility has helped find homes for over 10,000 animals; and that number is continuing to grow. Not only do they host numerous adorable friends, but they put on special charity events where all of the proceeds go to the foundation, as well as similar animal-centric foundations across Central Texas.

One of their recent adoptions was a Bengal cat named Arya. She is a beautiful purebred, who went home with a family who will love and pamper her as their only pet.

LARAS House (Limestone Animal Rescue Adoption Shelter)

Another safe space for animals of all breeds in Central Texas is the LARAS House. Like many other animal shelters, LARAS House puts on special events with the hopes of raising funds for the furry friends that they welcome into their shelter. They are also a part of the AmazonSmile program, wherein donators can contribute to Laras House through Amazon purchases. All you have to do is sign up, and .5% of your purchase for eligible products will be donated to the charitable foundation of your choice. LARAS House also allows for people to foster animals, giving them temporary homes while they are in search of a more permanent one. Visit their website to learn more about how you can give back, and how Laras House gives back to the Central Texas animal community.

During an ongoing event called “12 Days of Catmas” a few ‘cat-ivating’ kitties have found their ‘fur-ever’ home including a male cat named Seminal.

How Can You Get Involved?

There are so many things you can do to help your local animal shelter. You can certainly adopt animals, but don’t limit yourself to just cats and dogs. Not everyone is a cat or dog person, and you can find plenty of other animals in shelters. Consider adopting small caged animals like a hamster or guinea pig if you live in an apartment. If you are looking for a good animal that’s similar to a cat, but your landlord only allows caged animals, a rabbit or a bird are fantastic options.

Other routes you can take are fostering or volunteering. Volunteering in a shelter is one of the most rewarding things you can do; you get to provide animals with love and care while they wait for their new home. The same goes for fostering; when you foster an animal, you give the animal a chance to get used to living with people and can help with basic training making them more “adoptable” in the long run.
